Constitutional Development under British rule (1858 to 1917)

After the revolution of 1857, the British rule made significant changes in the governance of India. In this direction, the Government of India Act was passed in 1858 AD

Government of India Act (1858) (Magna Carta of Indian Independence)

Prime Minister Lord Durbie passed the Act on 2 August 1858, following the signature of Queen Victoria, to end the flaws of the company's Dual Rule Diarchy in India. Its purpose was to prevent the recurrence of an event like the Revolt of 1857, as well as to establish administrative system to use India in the British colonial interest

  • The Act is also known as the "1858 Act for the Better Government of India".
  • By this law, the rule of India was taken from the hands of the company and placed under the British crown. By this, the direct rule of the British Emperor was established over India.
  • The East India Company's rule over the India was ended by this act. The act is also known as the Magna Carta of Indian Independence.
